These days, virtually everyone
has a phone. You would think that with that, everyone would be accessible at
any time. But that is not always the case. And even when one is accessible,
effective communication is not always guaranteed. If you reflect a bit, you
would probably come up with a few scenarios where in spite of being “reachable”
by phone, one may not receive a message.
Personally, I can think of some
common experiences that people have - instances where the phone is available
but the person a message is intended for does not get it.
The
phone is switched off (intentionally)
The
phone battery has run down and has not been charged
The
phone is outside the area of cellular service coverage
The
phone is ringing but the owner simply ignores the incoming call
The
phone is ringing but the owner doesn’t have it
The
phone is ringing but the owner is not aware because it is on vibration or
silent mode.
The
owner has picked the call but is in a place where there is so much noise, they
are unable to make out what the caller is saying
I
like to think of our conversations with God somewhat as spiritual phone calls.
Viewed as such, one can readily identify with some of the above - all being
analogous to instances where we don’t effectively hear from God. These
include
times
when we “chose” to go our own way, living however we please;
times
when we are so spiritually depleted and don’t take out time to pray and study
God’s word
times
when we habitually live in “sin” (often associated with neglecting fellowship
with other believers);
times
when we know God’s word on an issue but are intent on doing what we want to do;
times
when our hearts are given over to anti-godly philosophies and principles;
times
when our hearts have become hardened by habitual disobedience to God’s word;
and
times
when we do desire to hear from God but are too busy with the many activities,
cares and worries of life which create such noise; drowning out the still small
voice of God.
In a nutshell: God delights in
speaking to us and is ever ready to have a conversation with His dearly beloved
(You). He wants to instruct, guide, commune, encourage, heal, comfort . . . But
can you hear Him? If not, why not?
“Incline your ear [to listen] and come to
Me;
Hear, so that your soul may live;
And I will make an everlasting covenant with you,
According to the faithful mercies [promised and] shown to David. [Isaiah 55:3; Amplified]
Hear, so that your soul may live;
And I will make an everlasting covenant with you,
According to the faithful mercies [promised and] shown to David. [Isaiah 55:3; Amplified]
To do: For more
effective reception (aka hearing from God), I encourage you to -
·
Make a personal
commitment to a daily time(s) of regular worship, prayer and study of God’s
word as well meeting regularly with other believers (stop skipping church!)
·
Determine in your
heart that God’s word is truth and the final authority
·
Live in obedience to
God regardless of the outcome
·
Truly repent (180°
turn) from any sinful habit
·
Stop spending so much
time in activities that create “noise” in your life - and what would those be?
