# Learn one skill

This is a sponsored submission from 360talkatives blog.

BANTER WITHOUT WORDS: DURU CHIMEZIE'S PROBLEM WITH THE WORLD IN THIS WEEK'S BANTER IS SIMPLE - JUST LEARN SOME 'FREAKING' SKILL!

I laugh nonstop. I laugh and I laugh. I laugh because we are so misguided. I laugh because we just don't seem to get what the real world is. Listen to me:

You feel you have secured all the rights in the world just because you succeeded in gaining admission into the university in just a single sitting? Therefore every other person has to adjust his life to suit you? Therefore the world should come to a stand-still and mechanically change how everything works because of you?
Therefore the President of Nigeria should instruct some Minister of works, or Job Creation or Job Finder, in fact minister of something...to provide you with 20-something different job vacancies for you to seamlessly select one from? LOL...you are dreaming. Millions have secured admission at the age of 14 and that didn't make any difference. I also got mine at first sitting; mind, it made no difference. So you are only just getting into the club of first-sitters!

Or you feel your choice of course is the solution to all the problems in the world? You are going to become some Engineer, Architect, Lawyer, Doctor, Artist, Space Scientist, Teacher, just something of such kind...therefore you feel you have a one-way access to getting multiple job offers after school without even applying and then the potential Employer would even go ahead to woo you with cash right on the interview table? LMAO...Steve Jobs dint even have it that easy and if his popularity couldn't let him do more, you are not even close!

Then, you are so popular in college and such is your popularity that even before you introduce yourself, everyone (including the VC) is on their feet clapping away at such an influence you are. You now certainly feel that once you are out of there, the whole world should equally know you, just because you are you?! And all the Group Managing Directors Nigeria has ever seen and produced will sprint to you (in scattering suits and flying paper-forms) with countless job offers clamoring for just an agreement to work for them at least once-a-week? Hmmmm....I should just quickly remind you that it has never happened and if it were to happen, Nigeria will only televise it; hailing the western country where it happened.

Even if you are some computer 'reciter'! you can recite everything a computer can do like you recite the '36 states and their capitals'. You know MS Word, Excel, Power point, all of them...and have attended all the computer trainings your local municipality can offer. In school you type exam questions for most lecturers and you compute results for the rest just because you can use MS Word and Excel. Therefore you feel Bill Gates would be your student in today's world? You feel all you need to do is to show the 150-something certificates on computer trainings to any employer to be offered the post of the Deputy Branch Manager without an interview? You feel you would recreate another Toshiba and Dell once you begin to work for them? Well...Steve Jobs was sacked by Apple (before being re-employed) even though he (co-)founded it. My neighbor's 12 year old daughter is a distant-programmer for TUBO-D; now if you don't even know TUBO-D, you are worse than I thought.

Ok, you are simply smart. Good G.P.A with semester consistency. Front-liner in all research assignments and a dedicated scholar. Hot brain, diligent and focused. Good competitor and a reason for every lecturer to prepare well before coming into class. Strong leader of groups and the brain behind every successful class research group. Perfect grade and an eventual 1-pointer. Then you think the excellent result will make Madam Patience Jonathan identify you? Then you think you are certainly the next best thing that ever happened to mankind after sliced bread? Then you feel all jobs belong to you and you should never even bother to know if there are vacancies at all as every job-owner must have heard about you and are burning with the desire to speak with you on phone? Haha...and ha! Please can I tell you that in just a single academic session, 118 students of the University Of Lagos Akoka, graduated with a First Class Honors. Nigeria has at least 128 Universities - we have not even included the Polytechnics, Colleges Of Education And Monotechnics (Private And Public) who equally had First class graduates. Now also consider that about 39,000 Nigerians are currently schooling outside the country with the likelihood of some returning for jobs and with First Class Honors. You should know that you just only have a certificate to tell us you are a graduate and that is what it is!

And then finally, you are a graduate and you have this job you do. You ain't very happy doing it but then since it is related to your field you just wouldn't imagine doing other things. You mock those who ain't exactly doing what they studied and your reason is because everybody must practice what they studied. Your theory does not care if the opportunities are there for him or her. All you care is that you just have to remain a Doctor if you studied Medicine and remain only just a doctor until death. Interesting!!...well, can your theory also explain to us how we have Presidents, Governors and so on? Or are there courses in school called 'Presidency' and 'Governorcy'? You really have a lot to know.

Now, let's bring down the tempo a little bit. Have you ever asked yourself many important questions lately? If you are still a student have you ever asked yourself what pain and sadness your old folks will feel after spending on you in school for 4/5 years and then you hit another 3 years (post-NYSC) without a job? If you are done schooling, have you ever wondered how easy life would suddenly be if you could get a good job or source of income as soon? And for you who is currently working (for someone) have you ever thought about what having several sources of income would do to your financial might? Well, if you haven't you should!

LEARN-ONE-SKILL is the way forward. It could be related to your field and it could still not. It could be as simple as Knowing how to make detergents or as complex as knowing how to make animations. But what it will definitely do to you is give you a much desired living. Apart from reducing your chances of over-reliance, by a great deal, it will put you in a position to be a creator of jobs! I am so much a campaigner for self-development, mostly through skill-acquisition. If you can grab one or so number of skills today, trust me, you would never be poor! if any of those things I wrote up there are ever going to happen (including that of the computer 'reciter' *winks*) then it would only be because you have amazing skills which no other job-seeker competing with you has. Job Vacancies will come for you if you are skilled enough to offer the employer a greater output more than the other applicants who had applied for an interview.

Your skill(s) is/are your key(s) to your greatness. The more skills you know, the higher your chances of being that dream guy or lady you have longed for! #LearnOneSkill now!
